Lots of cycling down the 101 throughout the Oregon coast, but one of our favorite day trips from Bandon is heading up the Elk River just south of Bandon toward Port Orford.

You can cycle from Bandon but we prefer to drive and park close to the 101 and the Elk River turn off. The first 5 miles are through farms along the river then just past the fish hatchery it becomes a county fairly unmaintained road. You may see a very rare car on the road with someone headed out to camp or hike but for the most part the road is all yours as it winds along the river.

It will eventually turn into a gravel road and connect other gravel roads but we’ve only gone out and back for an average 30 mile rode. If you want a longer ride, head across the 101 to Cape Blanco State Park and lighthouse. It’s stunning and worth the visit. You can also head to Hughes Historic House on the way and walk a trail along the river to the beach.
Pack a lunch or head a bit farther south to Port Orford and eat at Golden Harvest Herban Farm and Bakery or the The Crazy Norwegians Fish and Chips.
